Honoring Heroes: Bishop William Piercy Austin (1807 - 1892)

"Discovering and reclaiming our ancestral heritage; Honoring our ancestors must become to the descendants as natural as breathing." ...M'lilwana Osanku Honoring Heroes: Bishop William Piercy Austin (1807 - 1892); the Most Influential Person in the history of Guyana. Who is the most influential person ever to reside in what is now known as the Cooperative Republic of Guyana? It is my most humble opinion; The Most Honourable, and The Most Reverend Bishop Dr. William Piercy Austin (November 7, 1807 - November 9, 1892)is the best candidate to be recognized as the most outstanding individual in the history of the Colony of British Guiana.
His legacy is found in every phase of life in Guyana . After all, his idea, and diligent work gave rise to the academic pursuits in Guyana . The Bishop established Bishop's College for the Training of Teachers in 1851, in Charlestown , East Bank Demerara. The graduates of the Bishop's College were in the forefront of the charge and the academic excellence for well over seventy years. Daniel Edgar Sharples (1852-1921), and Samuel Augustus Campbell (1852-1931), are noted as two of the most outstanding primary school teachers in the annals of British Guiana . Tappin Johnson Elliott (1856-1938) Joseph Alfred Parkinson (1856-1945), Andrew Benjamin Brown (1857-1939), Tidman Abrahams , Hubert Boston, McLean Ogle, and Samuel Whitney Ogle, others are among the outstanding Schoolmasters of British Guiana who are graduates of the Bishop's College. The Graduates also played vital roles in the establishment of the British Guiana Teachers' Association and the development of political agitation and advocacy among and on the behalf of the working people of British Guiana. http://guygenbiosociety.blogspot.com/2006/09/graduates-of-bishops-college.html The Bishop established Queen's College in 1844. Well every Guyanese ought to be familiar with this prestigious institution's contribution to the development of Guyana . Perhaps, as high as seventy percent of males who occupied positions of consequence in the twentieth century in Guyana and particularly after the second major war of the century are graduates of Queen's College. The Bishop was also an advocate for the improvement of life of the underprivileged working class people of the Colony of British Guiana. These contributions were compliment to his efforts in the moral and religious philosophy of his office. The need is to enlighten our people respecting the real heroes of the past, and not the convoluted expressions of the political entities masquerading as championing the integrity and preservation of our national heritage. If they were the bishop would have been declared and enshrined as a national hero long before Hubert Nathaniel Critchlow. Certainly both political parties have displayed their prejudiced mindset and are therefore both undeserving of balance reasoning necessary of protecting and preserving our past with revisionism to make themselves more than what they really are – and that's atrocious.

John Archibald Parkinson, 88, Lutheran Chaplain

John Archibald Parkinson, 88, Lutheran Chaplain by Gayle Ronan Sims. Philadelphia Inquirer, Philadelphia, Pa; December 20, 2006: B.9
John Archibald Parkinson, 88, of Germantown, a Lutheran chaplain for prisons, mental hospitals and churches, died of a stroke Thursday at Pennsylvania Hospital.
Rev. Parkinson was born in New Amsterdam, Guyana. After graduating from high school, he learned accounting through correspondence courses from England and worked as an accountant in Georgetown, Guyana.
He joined a Lutheran church, where he became a lay pastor. With dreams of becoming a minister, the young man traveled from South America to Oxford, Chester County, where he earned a bachelor's degree in classical languages at Lincoln University. He played trumpet in Lincoln's marching band and was on the cricket and soccer teams.
His life changed in 1954. That year, he earned a bachelor of divinity degree from the former Lutheran Theological Seminary in Philadelphia, began a three-year stint as pastor of West Philadelphia Annunciation Lutheran Church, and married Willye E. Watson. In 1957, Rev. Parkinson took his young bride and infant son to Guyana and became a missionary.
"My mother, who was a city girl, hated Guyana," his daughter, Carol Parkinson-Hall, said. "She said my brother learned to run at 9 months to escape the giant mosquitoes."
Rev. Parkinson returned to the States in 1958 to become an assistant pastor at Resurrection Lutheran Church in St. Albans, N.Y. Three years later, the family moved to East Mount Airy. He was trained as a clinical pastor at Philadelphia State Hospital, where he worked until 1964.
For the next 20 years, Rev. Parkinson ministered to residents at mental hospitals, prison and nursing homes. These included the Pennsylvania Eastern Psychiatric Institute, Norristown State Hospital, the Philadelphia Detention Center, and the state hospital at Byberry.
He earned a master's degree in counseling at Temple University in 1968, and was trained in pastoral clinical training at the Presbyterian Medical Center.
"My father was a humble man, a champion for those who didn't have a voice," his daughter said. "He was assertive, but guarded and dignified."
Rev. Parkinson exercised every day. He jogged or walked around his neighborhood and made friends along the way.
He retired in 1984, but served as an interim pastor at churches. "He delivered a powerful sermon several weeks ago at St. Michael Lutheran Church," his daughter said.
In addition to his daughter and wife, Rev. Parkinson is survived by sons John, David and Jeffrey and 10 grandchildren.
Friends may call after 9 a.m. tomorrow at St. Mark's Lutheran Church, 6344 N. Broad St., where a funeral will begin at 11. Burial will be in Ivy Hill Cemetery.

Dr. Aubre de Lambert Maynard, 97, a Surgeon

Dr. Aubre de Lambert Maynard, an authority on surgery to treat heart, chest and abdominal wounds who was credited with saving the life of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. after he was stabbed in 1958, died Saturday at his home on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. He was 97.
Dr. Maynard was long associated with Harlem Hospital Medical Center, where he was director emeritus of surgery. The hospital's cardiac operating suite was named in his honor in 1972. He had also been a special lecturer and clinical professor of surgery at Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons.
On Sept. 20, 1958, when Dr. Maynard was chief of surgery at Harlem, Dr. King was stabbed by a deranged woman at a book-signing on 125th Street. During the attack, a steel blade was plunged into Dr. King's chest, where it was firmly lodged in the sternum.
Luckily, no attempt had been made to remove the blade before Dr. Maynard took over in the operating room, as that could have led to a fatal hemorrhage. He carried out the operation under the eyes of many anxious notables, including Gov. W. Averell Harriman of New York.
Aubre Maynard was born in Georgetown, Guyana, on Nov. 17, 1901. He received degrees in mathematics and physics from City College in 1922.
Cautioned that engineering held no prospects for blacks, he then received a medical degree from New York University in 1926, only to find the same racial obstacles at public and voluntary hospitals in the city and around the country.
But Harlem Hospital was then at the heart of a growing black population and Dr. Maynard, placing first in the annual internship examination, won a position there. He was the first black to be hired as an intern at the hospital, and he helped open doors for other blacks in the future.
In 1930, Harlem Hospital became one of the country's first important medical institutions with a racially integrated staff at all levels.
That came about under the leadership of Dr. Louis T. Wright, a graduate of Harvard Medical School and national executive chairman of the N.A.A.C.P. Dr. Maynard, a close associate of Dr. Wright, was a staff surgeon from 1928 to 1952 and then director of surgery until 1967.
He established a division of thoracic surgery and worked on the surgical procedures for lung, esophagus and cardiovascular conditions. The unit established his professional reputation and enhanced the hospital's as well.
In a 1996 interview, Dr. Maynard recalled the pressure surrounding the surgery on Dr. King.
''It was a momentous occasion for Harlem Hospital because it was a man of Dr. King's position who was known all over the world,'' he said. ''For him to be brought to Harlem Hospital for a dangerous thing like that, where his life was at stake, it was a challenge. Could Harlem Hospital show that it was up to this task?''
''You see,'' Dr. Maynard continued, ''it was a city hospital, and it was looked down upon. It was up to me to show the world that it could be done there.''
Dr. King, recovered from his injuries, left the hospital in less than two weeks.
Dr. Maynard was the author of many articles on his specialty and contributed chapters to textbooks. He wrote ''Surgeons to the Poor: The Harlem Hospital Story'' (Appleton, 1978). His wife, Janine, survives him.

The SS Lake Sewus of the Clyde Steamship company at Trinidad recently had on board a young man named George Gainford, who was sent back from New York to this colony where he was landed a few days ago. Pieces from The Creole,1864-1865

    The Week of Prayer, 1865
The Abolition of Slavery and Cessation of War
Beginning on Friday, January 6, 1865; James Davis, Hermann Schmettau, Joseph Ketley, Henry Bleby, Thomas Slater, Theo. S. Gregory, Geo. McFarlane, and E. A. Wallbridge and others held Prayer Meetings in the towns Georgetown and New Amsterdam and the rural districts. They wailed against slavery and the effects of war on the human society. It seems to me. Some one hundred and forty – seven years, later, that, their efforts commendable indeed, was in vain and simply a waste of time and energy. I would have advised those persons to spend their energies in agricultural industry.
